Environmental Analysis

Description and lines of research

The Environmental Analysis unit focuses on the development of advanced analytical methods in complex effluents and their application to the monitoring of organic micropollutants, as well as the identification of transformation products generated during water treatment. It has state-of-the-art equipment (high-end LC-MS/MS and high-resolution mass spectrometry).

Environmental Analysis

Strategic lines

  • Determination of organic micropollutants in wastewater and drinking water
  • Development of advanced analytical methods for the characterization of complex effluents and their application to the monitoring of organic microcontaminants during wastewater treatment to ensure their elimination
  • Identification of transformation products generated during wastewater treatment and establishment of degradation routes
  • Study of the influence of treatments on the quality of reclaimed water and evaluation of the impact of its reuse in agriculture and the environment
  • Determination of organic micropollutants in soils and plants.

Principal investigators

Patricia Plaza BolañosUAL

ORCID ID: 0000-0003-1386-2470 · Scopus Author ID: 8931522600. Patricia Plaza Bolaños is an Associate Professor at the University of Almería, head of CIESOL’s Environmental Analysis unit and a member of the FQM-374 Environmental Analysis and Water Treatment group. Her research includes the analysis of per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) in water and the development of advanced-reduction treatment processes. She received a Fulbright postdoctoral scholarship for a three-month research stay at the University of Colorado Boulder.

Leila Samira Nahim GranadosCIEMAT-PSA

ORCID ID: 0000-0002-8354-9685 · Scopus Author ID: 57151358700. Leila Samira Nahim Granados is a researcher with a PhD at the Plataforma Solar de Almería (CIEMAT-PSA) and a member of CIESOL’s Environmental Analysis unit. Her work focuses on solar photochemical and photocatalytic processes for water disinfection, decontamination and reuse. Her doctoral research assessed solar-driven processes and ozonation to treat and reuse wastewater from fresh-cut food production. She is principal investigator of PHOTOREDVALORA, a project developing advanced solar photoprocesses for pollutant removal and wastewater valorisation. She received the University of Almería Extraordinary Doctorate Award and the International PhD School on Advanced Oxidation Processes award for Best PhD Thesis 2020.
